Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ScanTotal.

Is ScanTotal really free?

Yes! ScanTotal is completely free with no signup required. All six of our scanning tools — URL scanner, file scanner, SMS analyzer, email analyzer, QR code scanner, and threat intelligence search — are available to everyone at no cost. We believe security should be accessible to all, not just those who can afford premium tools.

Is my data private?

Absolutely. We don't store your files or personal data. When you upload a file or paste a URL, we analyze it and return results — that's it. We don't create user profiles, don't track your browsing activity, and don't sell any data to third parties. Analysis is performed locally when possible, and any data sent to our servers for scanning is discarded immediately after analysis.

How does SMS scanning work?

Upload a screenshot or paste the text of a suspicious message. Our analyzer checks it against over 15 known scam patterns including fake delivery notifications, banking alerts, prize scams, government impersonation, and verification code theft. We also scan any URLs contained in the message and flag urgency tactics commonly used by scammers.

Can I scan email files?

Yes! Upload .eml files for comprehensive phishing analysis. We check sender authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), analyze all links in the email body, scan attachments for malware, and identify social engineering tactics. This helps you determine whether an email is legitimate or a phishing attempt before you interact with it.

What types of files can I scan?

You can upload any file type up to 50MB. Our scanner checks files against known malware databases to identify viruses, trojans, ransomware, spyware, and other threats. Common file types people scan include executables (.exe), PDFs, Office documents, archives (.zip, .rar), and email files (.eml). If you've downloaded something and aren't sure it's safe, check it here before opening it.

How does the QR code scanner work?

Upload an image containing a QR code, and we'll decode it to reveal the hidden URL or data. We then automatically check the destination against security databases to identify phishing sites, malware, or scam pages. This protects you from "quishing" — a growing attack where scammers place malicious QR codes in emails, flyers, restaurants, and public spaces.

Do I need to create an account?

No. ScanTotal works instantly with no registration, no login, and no email required. Just visit the site and start scanning. We designed it this way because security tools should have zero friction — when you're worried about a suspicious link or file, the last thing you want is to fill out a signup form.

Why ScanTotal?

Built for real people, not just security experts.

Every day, millions of people receive suspicious links in texts, emails with attachments that might be malware, and QR codes that could lead anywhere. Most people aren't cybersecurity professionals — they're parents, students, small business owners, and everyday internet users who just want to know: is this safe?

That's why we built ScanTotal. Instead of needing multiple tools or technical knowledge, you get one simple platform that checks URLs, files, text messages, emails, and QR codes. Paste it, upload it, or scan it — and get a clear answer in seconds.

Professional security tools exist, but they're built for IT teams and analysts. ScanTotal is different. We designed every feature to be instantly usable by anyone, regardless of technical background. No jargon, no complicated dashboards, no learning curve. Just straightforward threat detection that works.

We're also committed to education. Our security blog publishes practical, jargon-free guides on topics like identifying phishing attacks, creating strong passwords, avoiding the latest online scams, and protecting family members from fraud. Because understanding threats is just as important as detecting them.

Cybercrime costs individuals and businesses billions of dollars every year, and the people most affected are often those with the least technical knowledge. ScanTotal exists to close that gap — giving everyone access to the same security insights that were previously only available to professionals.
